Anwar likely to be back as MP before trial begins

It is almost certain that Anwar Ibrahim will win the by-election hands down. Barring any political miracle for the BN, Anwar is likely to win with a bigger majority at Permatang Pauh. With polling day on Aug 26, he would have been elected as MP before his case is mentioned on Sept 10. In fact, by then he would have been the Opposition Leader. Lim Kit Siang has said that is the consensus of Pakatan MPs. But of course, his supporters would say he would be on his way to become Prime Minister. No matter what, the sodomy charges would actually work to his advantage. You don't need a poll to know that the majority of Malaysians do not believe the sodomy charges. Without the benefit of compelling information in court from the prosecution, that means there won't be any persuasive elements to convince the people, including the voters of Permatang Pauh. By nature, people want to be convinced, better still to see a video. But for the time being, until the trial starts, there won't be any fresh information. That will work to Anwar's advantage. The fact that some BN leaders are talking of boycotting the by-election is as good as admitting defeat but the Prime Minister has said that it is not going to happen. The search is now for a local candidate who knows he is fighting a giant. For the time being, it is best that the BN accepts the reality that Anwar is making a comeback to Parliament.

Hi Chun Wai

Anwar:"Yay, I got bail right.Thank you vicious Dollah. I'm home on the range free in Permatang Pauh to tear you asunder. On my way to topple you"
But I don't think so Chun Wai. My hunch says it's a big IF he wins. The odds are stacked against him. But then again, it hinges on the choice of BN candidate.
If Anwar wins, it will be by a whisker. Nowhere as big a majority garnered by his wife.
But the sure thing, Permatang Pauh will have an absentee MP. Azizah will do the donkey job. Back to square one.
Since Anwar is a national obssession, why don't you do a poll among The Star readers on this?

I agree with reader no. 1. Finally, your article makes good sense! Bravo.

Hi Chun Wai,

If only the paper you edit carries fairer coverage for your readers to decide for themselves...

It's interesting that consensual charges are pressed when all the buildup says sodomy and even 'rape', Saiful is a victim that we also need to consider so that we are 'fair' to both parties... then only 1 party is charged in a consensual act.

does anyone really know what goes on behind closed doors between 2 people where sex is concerned....????!!!!!he may or may not have done this.... god only knows!!!! but for "MOST MALAYSIANS" to think that he hasn't through a POLL, which basis is not shared, is somewhat comical....its like saying i know what what goes on sexually between 2 married people through public polls....guys come on la...we are smarter than this.....

why do we give this anwar guy so much media space.....there are bigger issues in life and in Malaysia! you think he will fight for the plights of Malaysians if he becomes the PM? Did he when he was DPM? Maybe you need to look at which mold he came from????!!!!......leopards....I rest my case!!!

Sodomy is most commonly and legally defined as any contact between the genitals of one person, and the mouth or anus of another. Consensual or not - it's still sodomy.

Wong,

I stick to my earlier theory. There is something that wants Anwar back in parliament. I'm sure that will be the wishes of many too. With Anwar around be as opposition or ruling party we could expect things to be done transparently which is what we want.
