Swearing on the Quran - who to believe now?

The controversy over the sodomy allegation has taken a new twist. Saiful Bukhari, the complainant, is said to have told the authorities that he is willing to swear on the Quran. The suggestion, according to Mstar, the Bahasa Malaysian news portal, is that Saiful has agreed to the suggestion of Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin. The word is that Saiful has also informed the police of his readiness. It appears that this is next development in the sodomy controversy. DSAI is also reportedly prepared to swear on the Quran too if the Ulama advised him to, saying the ulama must be credible. So should Saiful and Anwar both swear on the Quran, who are Malaysians to believe? This looks like another step that will make Malaysians more confused.

Why do we need to swear on the Quran, with modern technology surely the doctors could determine what has gone in Saiful's anus and a proper DNA is done after. The problem is we (rakyats), no longer trust the 'twisters' Medical dept., AG and IGP of a true result coming from the ass examination. A country no longer can depend on her own Judiciary and the police is bound to be doomed!

Honestly, what will be swearing on the Quran do now. I have been told that once you engaged in this weird practices, the prophet does not consider you to be his "umat". So why they want to swear the Quran. They have done wrong, and it is certainly not a single party affair, both hands need to be clapped.Especially if Anwar is so into sodomising, why he want to swear on the Quran, will it mean anything?

Swearing upon the Quran should not make the Malaysians more confused. It is a step towards making it clearer. If both would do it, with Allah's willing, it would be made clear who is the guilty one.

Damage is already done. Please don't drag the Holy one into this ridiculous drama. More damage will be created by doing so.God forgive those involved in this Satanic temptation and enlighten them with love and forgiveness.

Both are Muslims and both said that they are telling the truth.
The situation that police investigations and also medical reports until now are not conclusive just makes it more confusing.
This effort is just another step to find out what the TRUTH is...

No No No. Since Anwar was attacked by certain people, they should provide the evidence. That's all. Will we tell everyone to swear? Swearing is easy. I think Be End (BN) has realised their mistake and they want a quick end to this saga which has worked against them. Provide the evidence. Swearing doesn't clear one's name. The accuser, the slanderer should provide the evidence.

Well, what to do?? We'll believe whatever we believe in. Malaysians of Taoist faith swear on the blood of a slaughtered white chicken ;-)

I've been following your articles in the newspapers and the blog. Its apparent that maybe you have not really grasp the understanding of Islam. In fact, one may ask, who are you to talk about Islam? Did you study Islam? Best not to talk about things you do not believe in.

And stop belittling the religion. It has become apparent also in your style of writing, this Islam bashing. Please stop it. If you want to learn, this is not the way.

Ask, find out from reliable sources. To make your case stronger, gives daleel. Please bear in mind the resentment many muslims have towards you. Its just not helping the situation.

THis is muslim affair. Lay off people

Leave the Quran alone.

Let's see whether both are willing to take the lie detector test.

It seemed easier to sweer to God than to live by evidence. This is not right. Why bring God to sins done by man? I am no Muslim but this brings down the level of the Muslim God. Hey, what if nothing happens after they swore and some man slip in poison to one of the swearers? Did God judge him, or the poisoner who judge him?

Datuk, what is your newspaper trying to do? The Mstar and today's online edition quoted hearsays on Saiful's willingness to swear. And parotting it like a true one-upsmanship. You have been asking for the law to take charge, why go back on your word now?

This is where the actual confusion comes from. People who don't really understand Islam tend to talk about it.
The common believe and understanding are that things have to be kept separate from God (e.g. don't involve God, take lie detector, only rely on scientific evidence - which is actually still dependant on humans).
If these two Muslims are still willing to still hold on to their "truth" and they contradict, let them swear upon the Quran as they said they would. Obviously, they, as Muslims, now what they are putting themselves into by doing it.
Not saying that swearing upon the Quran is a must. It is just one way of making it clear.

@Amoker, anything that happens is Allah's willing. Whatever happens after that is Allah's willing because whatever it is they, as Muslims, are eternally answerable to Allah.

Actually, one may accused Chun Wai of against Islam but did this suggestion of swearing not come from Muslim ( politicians, even academics, leaders)? For an outsider, it is indeed amazing to see this being suggested and debated by the Islamic experts. By having this mudslinging, this issue will inadivertantly be subjected to scrutiny. Since the pandora box is open, it is then ironic if those who are discussing it are called names and termed 'religionist'.

Swear what laa, tell a death row inmate waiting to gantung to swear on whoever, whatever for his freedom also he wld swear lo.

Some ppl just don't care what's the weight of it, so what's the problem to swear in the first place? Afraid that whichever God they believed in wld punish them in afterlife? Yeah rite, my backside is on the line now in this life, why shld i care for the afterlife when it has yet to come? Maybe after this(swearing), i wld be a good person, do more charity, donate more money, donate more blood, i'm sure that wld contra off my previous sin(fm the swearing).

For all we might not know, there might be another suggestion later to determine the credibility of one's word against the other, bring in the lie detector, bla bla bla....

Sigh, tired laa...all the circus and clowns, when can we get back on track to what's important; our daily life and how to survive it...

Surely, I am at not the same level of you guys who are the experts.

My thought is this. That Islam has its own law esp. in subject of rape/ sodomy. And we have these Syariah court and Civil courts to choose from, which are God;s creation to dispence justice. In the pursuit of truth, one have to be rely on evidences and these 2 avenues should be uphold, instead we have a circus on mubahalah via Friendster and hearsay statements.

Suddenly , the Islamic judicial system and justice premise is shrunk to a mubahalah , probably telecast live in RTM1. For an outsider, it will be a shame.

Ok, i will keep quiet and make peace. Do appreciate this debate and chat. I do however do want to say this, that if Muslim wants non Muslims to ask more about Islam, it is useful to not label those who ask question "non muslims" ( u don't know what you are asking about) an "anti-islam"( oh,u have agenda?) . And then complain that people dun understand Islam. : ) May Allah give you peace.

What happens if person asked to swear on the Quran was not religious? Would it still account for anything?

I'm not religious so asking me to swear in the name of the load means nothing.

Why mix politics and religion in the first place?
